The rocky landscape has shaped the life of Swedish farmers, and ore mining has been a big part of the Swedish economy. Rocks hide many Earth treasures and influence our everyday life. In glass manufacturing, pigments for the glass colors are different metal oxides extracted from various types of ore. A few of the metals used in the colors for this sculpture are silver, copper, iron, and nickel. In Skansen, you can see all of those ores in the exhibition by Lill-Skansen. The appearance of the Mirror Dam, the rocky cliff in the background, made us think about the simple and so often overlooked beauty of rocks and stones. The repeating reflection theme honors the name, Mirror Dam.
Colorful hand-blown glass "rocks" are covered with a layer of silver on the inside. The reflective surface makes "rocks" stand out in the background. The sculpture is reflected in the water below, and at the same time, each mirror object reflects the surroundings. The sculpture's appearance changes together with the weather and nature around. The sculpture brings more color to a rocky area in winter when people need it most, and creates a fun ensemble with blooming nature in summer.
The sculpture was designed by Aleksandra and Martin Ehrensvärd and all the glass parts were made and installed by Stockholms Glasbruk in 2021.
