History since 1933

Stockholm's Glassworks was built here at Skansen in 1936, but it started three years earlier in a basement room at Södermalmstorg in Slussen. Old drawings of a glassworks from the end of the 18th century in Johannisholm - in Venjan's parish in Dalarna - stood as a model for the construction. Stockholm's Glassworks was run from 1933 to 1980 by manufacturer Ture Berglund and his wife, Lily. After that, his daughter, Marianne, with her husband, Göran Hammar, continued developing the glas studio. Their granddaughter Karin Hammar later took over.

In July 2020, Stockholm's Glassworks was acquired by Martin Ehrensvärd and Aleksandra Ehrensvärd. You can find them almost every day in the studio, bringing new life to the work by using the knowledge and techniques they have gained from working many years with world-class masters.

The School Vase since 1933 - Glassworks' First Model

In the spring of 1933 when the glassworks just had opened, school children came and asked the glassblowers if they could do something for their teacher before graduation. Then this little vase was created. Using a wooden stick with six nails that are pressed down on the top edge of the vase, a flower bell is formed.
The vase gets a crackled surface by dipping it in water. The original school vase was a light green color. The green color came from iron found in the Swedish sand in the glass raw material used at that time.

The school vase is still popular and and is now available in multiple colors. The vase is sold both at our store at Skansen and online.
